Last week I went to Riddle Hospital, which is down the street from my boyfriend's house, to get blood work done. Dr. N wants to evaluate me to see if I'm suitable to take lithium. He finally got my test results back and they were normal so he said I could drop off my prescription at the pharmacy and start taking it right away. I had the prescription filled this afternoon and was shocked: $15 for an entire bottle! Dr. B wasn't kidding when she said lithium is the cheapest of all bipolar medications.

So now I'm at home with a huge bottle of 90 300 mg pills. Dr. N to start by taking just one in the mornings and see how I do, then if I feel okay, to add a second pill at mid-day, and if I still feel okay, to add the third and final pill in the evening. Matt was reading the bottle and said that it is going to make me tired and needs to be taken with food and water. All my other medication has always made me incredibly tired, especially the Geodon, and ESPECIALLY with alcohol. I've heard that lithium will make me fat but Dr. N says that's not always true. He had a patient who took it for twenty years and didn't gain a pound.

I'm looking at the bottle of "horse tranquilizers" (though Matt says they're the same size as Tylenol, I still think they're huge) and wondering, if my doctor was right about these pills being so cheap, could she also be right about their effectiveness? Anyone have any experience with lithium carbonate that they'd like to share?

Will It Save Me???
Katie, I took Lithium for about 15 years. I never gained a pound. I never took it with food. It never made me tired. That's me though. You should take it as prescribed, of course and see how things go. It is a really good drug and an "old stand-by" as my doctor calls it. I guess after all of that time, my body just couldn't take it anymore, so I'm not taking it now, but you shouldn't let that thought bother you. Just be sure to get your Lithium level drawn every time the doctor asks, as you can have liver damage if you develop a "toxic" level of it in your system. The doctor may ask you to get a blood draw once a month for a while and eventually just once or twice a year, once you know how your body tolerates it and at what dose. I took the full 900mg. Also, did you buy your Lithium with a prescription co-pay? If so, you paid too much because that amount you got is actually just $4 at Wal-Mart.
I wish you the best of luck and hope that this is your miracle medication and that it works for a really long time.
Take care of yourself and have a great weekend.
     Stephen
P.S. Alcohol can play with your Lithium level a little bit, so you should probably avoid drinking to excess, but other than that, it shouldn't bother you to have a few drinks on it. It's not the sort of thing to make alcohol a lot more intense.

You can feel some side effects. But they do go away after a while. Or maybe you get used to them. You have to drink water alot and have blood work done maybe 4or 5 times My husband and both children all take it for years. It helps them. So good luck. All you have to do is try. See what happens...just give it some time.  Love Moonie

Lithium Carbonate
Katie,
I have been taking lithium carbonate since the early eighties always the 300mg once in the morning and once at night. It saved me from complete breakdowns in that it kept me sane and in control enough that I new I was not well. I am very much a happy camper with the stuff and take risperdal along with lexapro for depression. I suppose you will be taking something else besides Lithium Carb. It is a good bipolar medicine.

Dr. N had said he was considering putting me on an anti-depressant along with the lithium but that he wanted to wait and see what it did to me by itself and see how effective it was alone. I took the pill a few hours ago and feel fine. The only part of this that I really feel down about is that I have to get blood tests done once every 4 to 6 weeks and that means they'll stick me with a needle. I'm deathly afraid of needles. In fact I've almost passed out while going to the doctor's offices and having blood taken before. When they tested me before to see if I was good for the lithium, I started crying and shaking all over and it was all I could do to keep still while the needle was in my arm. I was sore all day. The nurse almost laughed. I don't think she knew how to react. It was awful but if these little pills of salt and chalk are going to make me feel better, the monthly needle pricks are well worth it to me.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!

I recently switched from the Lithium pills to Lithium in the liquid form. I can't swallow pills so I was breaking open the pills and mixing the content into a PB&J sandwich. Problem was, I had a bitter, metallic and salty aftertaste in my mouth. The liquid is raspberry flavored and has a bit of a sour bite to it, but it's much better than the taste of the pills. Stephen is right - Lithium is in on the $4 generic list at most pharmacies, so you should check that out. Also, I can attest to no weight gain, and yes, do drink a lot of water. My p-doc also warned me not to eat too many salty foods. Other than that, yeah, it's been a great med for me.  ~Jen
